Five Charged in Connection with Matthew Perry’s 2023 Death

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has announced charges against five individuals related to the tragic 2023 death of actor Matthew Perry. The charges were revealed during a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday morning.
The accused include two doctors, Perry’s live-in personal assistant, and a figure authorities have dubbed “The Ketamine Queen.” According to the U.S. Attorney’s press release, the defendants are accused of “distributing ketamine to Perry during the final weeks of his life.”
U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada condemned the actions of those charged, stating that they “exploited Mr. Perry’s struggles with addiction.”
“They were fully aware of the harm they were causing,” Estrada said.
Matthew Perry, beloved for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit TV show “Friends,” tragically passed away in October 2023 at the age of 54. The actor was found unresponsive in the pool at his Pacific Palisades residence. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that Perry’s death resulted from the “acute effects of ketamine” leading to subsequent drowning.
Anne Milgram, Administrator of the DEA, emphasized the broader implications of the case, stating, “Matthew Perry’s downfall began with doctors who violated their oath for financial gain, leading to street dealers who provided him with unmarked vials of ketamine. Every day, the DEA collaborates with our federal, state, and local partners to safeguard the public and hold accountable those who distribute lethal and dangerous substances, whether they are local traffickers or medical professionals betraying their duty of care.”

A Battle with Addiction
During the Thursday announcement, Estrada revealed that investigators suspect Perry “relapsed into addiction” in the fall of 2023.
Perry had openly shared his decades-long battle with substance abuse in his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.” He recounted how his dependency on prescription painkillers began after a jet ski accident on the set of the 1997 film “Fools Rush In,” leading to an addiction to Vicodin.
In his memoir, Perry disclosed that his addiction escalated to the point where he was consuming up to 55 pills daily, which led to a noticeable weight loss during his time on “Friends.” He expressed the pain of watching his physical transformation during the show.
“I was painfully thin, and the disease was taking a severe toll on me,” Perry wrote.
Ketamine, a drug that has gained popularity in recent years as a treatment for depression, anxiety, and pain, was part of Perry’s treatment regimen before his death, according to those close to him. He was reportedly undergoing ketamine infusion therapy and being treated by at least two doctors, per The Associated Press.
Perry’s untimely death sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond. He was a cherished member of the “Friends” cast, which included Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, and Lisa Kudrow. The cast released a heartfelt statement following his passing, saying, “We are all so deeply saddened by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just colleagues; we were a family.”
“There is so much we want to express, but for now, we need time to grieve and process this unimaginable loss,” the statement continued. “In due course, we will share more, but for now, our thoughts and love are with Matty’s family, friends, and everyone who adored him worldwide.”
In May, Los Angeles Police Department Captain Scot Williams confirmed to CNN that the investigation into Perry’s death was ongoing and of a criminal nature. Authorities are focusing on how Perry obtained the drugs and identifying those who supplied them. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are also involved in the investigation.
